Dick Williamson, co-owner of Lakota Industries, has long
worked on the behalf of the Native Americans living on
reservations in South Dakota. He saw that while financial
assistance was necessary and commendable, the 75% unemployment
rate made self-sufficiency unreachable for most Native
families. In 1996, he founded Lakota Archery with the
goal of growing a manufacturing component that could be
migrated to the reservations, providing employment for
the people there. Currently, Williamson is working with
several reservations looking for the best site to locate
the manufacturing facility. By 2007, Williamson hopes
to have a full-scale manufacturing facility producing
Lakota Bows on Lakota lands.
